Words on Wednesday 13th August 2025
Dear Writers,
Firstly, a huge thank you to Anne who writes under the pen name Anni Rose, who came in on Wednesday as a Guest Author, her insights into writing contemporary romantic books with elements of humour were really fascinating, and insightful. It was lovely seeing people ask her questions, the time did go rather quickly, so we will look at getting her back again. If you would like her to talk more about her characters, or plot lines, or go into more detail generally, please let us know, as we can then streamline the session towards that.
Please note that we cannot confirm Artswords dates until we receive Artswords Newsletter on the 1st day of each month, so we really appreciate your patience. Just a reminder that the Artswords Writer's Kitchen and Artswords Writer's Cafe now cost £2 per session, but grants are available for those who cannot afford the costs.
Please note that the Artswords Events will not be running during the whole of August. There are different events for this month only, which I have added below.
Here's your weekly update:
This week's Extra Task:
Write a romantic interaction between 2 characters. They could meet in a coffee shop, or bump into each other and their drinks would fly everywhere. They are sitting next to each other at the cinema, but cannot really see each other until the lights come on at the end of the night. It could be set in a Park, Supermarket, Restaurant, and so on. Could be a school crush gets reignited, and loads of unwanted emotions come out. Set in a Gothic era between two Vampires. The ideas are endless, and as we have not covered this genre before, we thought it would be good for you to have a go at it.
Sneaky peek at next Week's Tasks:
If I were: To meet a famous Artist, who would it be?
Main Task: Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 by an Italian handyman. How would you plot an art heist?
MARLBOROUGH LITERARY FESTIVAL 2025
Marlborough Literary Festival has an event Prose in the Pub event where people can read up to 500 words.
Where: Green Dragon Pub, 12-13 High St, Marlborough SN8 1AA.
When: 27th September 2025.
Time: 6pm onwards.
I have included the link, if it doesn't work, please let me know, and I can forward the original email it was sent in.
What is Prose?
A Prose put simply is when everyday language is used in writing, for example, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. It's the way we usually write and talk, without any rhyme or rhythm in Poetry. In other words, these examples of stories are written in the specific era they were created in, using the language of the time.
I hope this makes sense, if you are unsure, please let us know and we can re-cap on Wednesday.
Another, very important date for the diary, even though we are jumping way ahead into next year:
SWINDON FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE - 4th to 10th MAY 2026 - more information nearer the time.
Happy writing everyone!
Regards,
Penni and Sarah
