 Dear Writers,

Please note that we cannot confirm Artswords dates until we receive Artswords Newsletter on the 1st day of each month, so we really appreciate your patience.  Just a reminder that the Artswords Writer's Kitchen and Artswords Writer's Cafe now cost £2 per session, but grants are available for those who cannot afford the costs.

Please note that the Artswords Events will not be running during the whole of August.  There are different events for this month only, which I have added below.

Here's your weekly update:

This week's Extra Task:
This week we were at Queen's Park, and it was lovely chatting to you all outside the group.  Anna did some beautiful artwork, and Leroy made an amazing cake that he brought with him and it was lovely.  It was a sponge with an orange covering, including clotted cream.  Believe me, it didn't last long.  For those of you who got to taste it, describe how you felt with the taste of the soft sponge with the tanginess of the citrus on top.  If you were unable to go to Queen's Park, describe how you feel eating your favourite food.

Sneaky peek at next Week's Tasks:
If I were: A legal Act, what would you protect?
Main Task: On this day in 1965 in America was the signing of the Voting Rights Act.  It overcame barriers at State, and Local Levels.  This allowed African/Americans to vote for the very first time.  Write a piece using your own experience when voting for the first time, how did this make you feel having this freedom.

DATES TO REMEMBER:

MARLBOROUGH LITERARY FESTIVAL 2025

Marlborough Literary Festival has an event Prose in the Pub event where people can read up to 500 words
Where: Green Dragon Pub, 12-13 High St, Marlborough SN8 1AA.
When: 27th September 2025.
Time: 6pm onwards.

I have included the link, if it doesn't work, please let me know, and I can forward the original email it was sent in.

What is Prose?
A Prose put simply is when everyday language is used in writing, for example, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.  It's the way we usually write and talk, without any rhyme or rhythm in Poetry.  In other words, these examples of stories are written in the specific era they were created in, using the language of the time.

I hope this makes sense, if you are unsure, please let us know and we can re-cap on Wednesday.

Another, very important date for the diary, even though we are jumping way ahead into next year:
SWINDON FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE - 4th to 10th MAY 2026 - more information nearer the time.

Happy writing everyone!

Regards,
Penni and Sarah
